The Power of Definition: Setting Standards That Shape Your Life
In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, every belt color tells a story. But before you can earn a belt, you need to understand what it represents. This principle extends far beyond the mats: you cannot rise above a standard you’ve never defined.
Why Definitions Matter
A definition isn’t just a set of words; it’s a clear picture of your standard. Without definition, goals are vague, progress is hard to measure, and accountability becomes impossible. Defining what something means to you sets a target you can actually aim for — in training, in business, and in life.
A Jiu-Jitsu Example: Defining a Black Belt
Ask yourself: What does a black belt mean to me?
There’s a universal definition — a black belt represents years of dedication, technical mastery, and deep understanding of the art. But then there’s your personal definition. What kind of black belt do you want to be? A fierce competitor? A thoughtful instructor? A lifelong student? All of the above?
By creating your own standard, you give yourself a roadmap to growth.
As a white belt, your definition might be simple: “A black belt is someone who doesn’t quit.” Over time, that definition will deepen. Your standard evolves as you do, but it always provides direction.
Standards Create Personal and Shared Accountability
A clear definition doesn’t just allow you to hold yourself accountable — it gives others permission to hold you accountable too.
As both a Jiu-Jitsu coach and a life coach, I see this consistently. Students and clients often seek accountability, but when I ask, “To what standard do you want to be held?”, they’re often stumped.
If someone says, “Can you hold me accountable to being a good student or a great father?” my response is always: “What does that mean to you?”
Without definition, “good” is subjective. With definition, “good” becomes actionable and measurable. Sharing your standards gives your coaches, mentors, or peers a clear framework to help you grow.
Applying This Beyond the Mats
This principle applies to every role in life:
As a spouse: What does a loving, supportive Husband or Wife look like in your eyes?
As a parent: What is your personal standard as a Father or Mother as well?
As a leader or employee: How do you define professionalism and excellence in your career?
When standards are clear, growth is trackable. When they’re vague, you’re left guessing.
Standards Are Living, Not Static
Defining your standards doesn’t trap you — it grows with you. A black belt’s definition changes after years of teaching. A parent’s definition evolves as children grow. Standards are living tools meant to guide, not confine.
How to Get Started
Pick one role or goal in your life.
Write down what excellence in that area means to you right now.
Share that definition with someone you trust.
Revisit and refine your definition regularly.
Even if your standard evolves, having clarity gives you direction.
Final Thoughts: Define It, Share It, Live It
Whether it’s martial arts, relationships, leadership, or life in general, definition is the foundation of growth and accountability.
Without definition, growth is guesswork.
With definition, you have a measurable standard to pursue.
When shared, your standards invite community support and accountability.
Your journey — as a student, parent, leader, or martial artist — starts with one powerful question:
“What does this mean to me?”
