The New 13 Week BJJ Combatives Q&A
How is it different than the current combatives class?
Over the past few years we have been exploring and incorporating Ecological training into our model. Through task based games students have been able to develop primary grappling skills at a more rapid pace. The 13 week program is to focused on the developing the primary grappling skills required to be more effective & efficient on the mat and to help our beginner students get a better grasp of the big picture by presenting the techniques in live context vs. cooperatively learning techniques before acquiring the skill sets to use them in context. Ecological training is on the rise for a reason, and Clinch Academy likes to keep our programs on the up and up.
How long will beginners stay in the combatives program?
Currently students are required to cycle through the 45 lesson combatives program twice before bumping to the accelerated program. It take 5 months each cycle so 10 months in total. Students will be required to cycle through our 13 week program 3 times before bumping up. This is a total of 9 months.
*Students who have been in our current combatives program for an extended amount of time will be grandfathered into the new program with their current time on the mat in view. In this case you may not have to cycle 3 times through but maybe twice or once depending on your current status.
What do I do about my lesson attendance sheet?
There will be a new lessons sheet. You will start fresh on the new lessons sheet but you can mark anywhere on the new sheet the number of lessons you have currently taken. The fullness of the 13 week combative program would require approximately 78 lessons before bumping up. If you have taken 20 lessons (or however many) in the current program, just put that number on your current sheet with a circle around it and we can count that towards your total number of classes. Just start fresh on the new sheet as far as marking current classes.
Will there still be a Demo Test for Blue Stripe & Double Blue Stripe?
We will be reducing the belt system down to just a single blue stripe. The double blue strip will be eliminated. You will see on your lessons sheet that you will get a tape stripe after completing the first cycle. A second tape stripe after completing the 2nd cycle and after completing the 3rd cycle, you will have the opportunity to test for your blue stripe belt. If you pass, you will be awarded your blue strip and invited to the accelerated program.
The test will not be a demonstration of techniques, but a live drill and sparring session. Requirements will be posted soon!
Why are you changing the program?
Our current combatives program has served us very well over the years, however, things can always get better. Currently we are moving in a new direction with our Coaching and Training philosophy and we are making an effort to UPGRADE the program to better meet the concept of Ecological Training through Task Based Games.
